However, if you have a previous history of cancer, blood clots, untreated high blood pressure, liver disease, or are pregnant, HRT may not be suitable to you (source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at the BMS TV <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/Kathy Abernethy, Director of Menopause Services\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>, where Kathy Abernethy, Director of Menopause Services, talks about HRT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>How do I take HRT?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be given as tablets, patches, gels, vaginal creams, pessaries or rings. I did too&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHS website states &#8220;recent evidence says that the risks of HRT are small and are usually outweighed by the benefits&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A further NHS website (source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk\/health-information\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/risks-hrt\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk\/health-information\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/risks-hrt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>) says &#8220;If you are under the age of 50 and take HRT, there is no extra risk of breast cancer. You still have the same risk of breast cancer as the rest of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an increased risk for people over 50 who take\u00a0combined HRT (oestrogen and progesterone taken together).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>What are the risks vs the benefits of HRT?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultimate benefit of taking HRT is to hopefully relieve the menopausal symptoms you were suffering.  It can also help protect against weakening of the bones (oesteoporosis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there can be side effects when initially starting HRT.  Oestrogen side effects can include cramps, feeling sick and bloating (see <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/side-effects\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt\/side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for more details), whilst progesterone may cause breast tenderness, swelling, depression.  The NHS advises to monitor such symptoms and obviously discuss with your GP if they do not settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"flex-basis:600px\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/stoplookingatme.jovinten.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-308\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p>The organisation, <strong>Women&#8217;s Health Concern<\/strong> has produced a comprehensive fact sheet on the risks and benefits of HRT. The NHS says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no limit on how long you can take HRT, but talk to a GP about how long they recommend you take the treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Most women\u00a0stop taking\u00a0it\u00a0once their menopausal symptoms pass, which is usually after a few years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the NHS then advises the longer you take HRT can be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Is bio-identical hormone therapy safer than HRT?<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Treatments that work for one person might not work for you.
